PHOTO VOICE: Children's Perspective on Road Traffic Safety

PHOTOS FROM INDIA 2008

“In this photo, the hawkers have made the footpath their shop. Due to this, a very broad footpath seems very narrow and it is very tough for a person to walk on the footpath. Even the people waiting for a bus have to wait on the road.” Aatush, age 12

“I like that at least one person is wearing a helmet but what is wrong here is that there are three people riding a scooter. Instead of risking their lives they can use public transportation or if they can afford it then they can use a four-wheeler.” Anuj, age 11

“Walking on the road between the moving traffic is dangerous which can seriously injure or kill you. A lady is crossing in the middle of the road. Pedestrians must cross at zebra crossings.” Farzin, age 12

“At the first look, the colors, horns and seats of the handcart caught my eye. The men pushing it were going very slowly. As a result, the traffic was being disrupted and they were blaring their horns. Traffic was getting congested.” Hera, age 12

“Safety is required! Playing on the road is unsafe! I believe that till the age of eight, a child’s brain is not ready to face traffic. Parents should explain to the child not to play on the road. His life is more important than his ball.” Kavita, age 12

"Two huge buses are seen coming at top speed, while a woman least bothered of the speeding buses has stopped in the middle of the road and is yelling at someone to cross the road and accompany her in her life taking stunt.” Kayzin, age 10

“Fathers of the two children are probably watching some new features on their mobiles while the children are playing in the small patch of grass, between tons of concrete. If the children fall on the road, a car could just crush them.” Jehan, age 13

“Basically you can see the happiness on the girl’s face as she skipped on the edge of the road many times. The girl is so busy skipping that she is unaware of the cars coming from behind and one of the cars may come and hit her.” Mithra, age 14

“In this picture there is a board of the “school ahead” sign. There is a hawker selling skirts below this board. He has used this board as a hook to put his hanger on. He expects many people to come there claiming it as a super bazaar.” Spenta, age 13. View full image

“The road is congested with people. There is no traffic signal nor police men. There are hawkers on the footpath and there is no space to walk. There are people traveling on two-wheelers without helmets. The road looks chaotic.” Xerxes, age 12

“Here they both are in a very dangerous position as the cars mostly speed and it is a turning and the arrows can be seen. The car driver will dash into the pedestrian and will not be able to stop. For safety, people should not walk on the highway.” Zeenia, age 14. View full image
