“Caroline presented this picture and started a discussion about how dangerous those cracks can be and how they should be fixed. The class agreed that they will have to pay more attention when they walk to make sure they don’t trip on the cracks.” Caroline, 12 years old, Allen County.
“Zane presented a picture of a tree root growing under the sidewalk. The sidewalk was lifted about 6 to 8 inches and Zane said he has tripped over it in the past and knows other kids could too. The class agreed that an obvious danger like that should be fixed right away to prevent unsafe situations.” Zane, 13 years old, Allen County.
“In this picture there is a trash can in the way, overgrown bushes that make the walk narrower, and a hidden driveway. The owner needs to cut back the bushes and also to shorten the bushes on either side of the driveways because the walk is too narrow for 2 children to walk side-by-side.” Jackson, 8 yrs old, Charlotte-Mecklenburg.
“I picked this picture because it means pedestrians have the right of way. I think this sign is safe.” Caroline, 9 years old, Charlotte-Mecklenburg.
“This is not safe because they are barefoot and there is a crosswalk they could use only 10 feet away. “ Riley, 12 years old, Davis County.
"This picture isn’t safe because the truck is in the crosswalk and the boy had to go around." Edgar, 11 years old, David County.
“This is a dangerous place, but there’s a crosswalk. They have to have two crossing guards to make it safe. The traffic comes from lots of directions and lots of people are in a hurry and want to drive down all the streets. Cars don’t like to slow down for the guards and are mad when they have to stop.” EstePhanie, 10 years old, Greater Green Bay.
“The safety patrol girl doesn’t have on an orange belt. She looks like any school kid. I wouldn’t know she was safety patrol unless I watched her for a long time. Do the cars know she is safety patrol? I couldn’t see any signs that say kids are crossing or to slow down. “ Rose, 12 years old, Greater Green Bay.
“The concrete is broken down the middle and the grass is growing over the walk. It would be dangerous to walk or ride a bike on this sidewalk. We have lots of stuff like this in my neighborhood and you have to watch where you walk or you will trip and hurt yourself.” Kris, 11 years old, Greater Green Bay.
“I chose the graffiti picture because it was obvious that we have more of this than anywhere else. It’s a safety problem.“ Jonathan, 12 years old, Los Angeles West.
“The sidewalk ended and turned into grass. We had to cross before on a busy road. They should continue the cross walk because it’s safer – now they have to go to the other side where there is no cross walk. There should be a sidewalk there. It takes longer to use a cross walk. “ Austin, 12 years old, Madison.
“I took this picture to show that in construction stay safe please.“ Adam, 11 years old, Marion County.
“I took this picture to show that you can have fun and be safe at the same time invite a friend if you want." Adam, 11 years old, Marion County.
“It’s hard to call this a “sidewalk” when you can hardly see it to walk on it because of the dirt and overgrown grass. The concrete is very broken up and the low hanging tree limbs make it hard to pass by.“ Lauren, 13 years old, Marion County. View full photo.
“This sidewalk is not a place to ride a bike. It looks as though there is a built-in ramp aimed right for a tree! I sure wouldn’t want to be pushing a baby stroller along here either.“ Lauren, 13 years old, Marion County.
"We took this picture in the school parking lot. When we were walking, I felt unsafe because the car was in the crosswalk, and it should not be there. I chose to take this picture because you can see that the car is going to hit the student. The driver has to be more careful. Also, the student is crossing the street, but he is not paying attention, so that is a problem that he must fix on his own part." Jennifer, 13 years old, Montgomery County.
"The environment is a busy road in a residential and commercial area. I chose this picture because the leaves of the tree are blocking the pedestrian crossing sign. I felt unsafe on that street because drivers won’t be ready for people who are crossing. This is another place in our neighborhood where they need to cut the leaves of a tree to make sure that both drivers and pedestrians are safe." Eduardo, 13 years old, Montgomery County.
"The environment is a busy road in a resident/commercial area. This picture shows us that this is an area where the sidewalk has stopped. From here, people have to walk in the street. So, the government has to improve the walking environment to give the people a safe place to walk, or they will have to walk on the street in what is already a narrow road." Jonattan, 14 years old, Montgomery County.
"The environment of this picture is at a local metro station in a suburban and urban area. I decided to take this picture because the pedestrian was crossing the street where there was no crosswalk. To be safe, she must go to the crosswalk to cross the street." Jonattan, 14 years old, Montgomery County.
"This shows a sidewalk that needs repair. This could cause bad injuries." Deja, 11 years old, Northwest Piedmont.
"The picture shows that the crosswalk needs to be painted over. This picture shows that it was caused by cars. It shows that the city needs to have more responsibility for their city." Neon, 11 years old, Northwest Piedmont. View Full Photo.
"This picture has a lot of dirt, leaves, and other stuff going down the storm drain. We are not supposed to put stuff in the storm rain because it will contaminate our water that we drink." Tiana, 11 years old, Northwest Piedmont. View Full Photo.
"I chose this picture because it needed to be cleaned. The rain goes in the manhole so the water would not flood. This trash in the manhole was probably formed by people littering. The water cannot go in the manhole because of the trash." Tiana, 11 years old, Northwest Piedmont.
"If you are in the crosswalk you are to look left, look right and you look left again. Then if no cars are coming you may cross the road." Kennard, 9 years old, Prince George’s County.
"This is unsafe because it is so cracked. Someone could easily twist an ankle or crash a bike because of the right side of the concrete. People pushing strollers or wheelchairs would have a very hard time because of the cracks in the sidewalk." Becca, 14 years old, Sarpy Cass. View Full Photo.
"This is unsafe because it is so cracked. Someone could trip and fall and hurt themselves. A biker could go flying off his or her bike. Then if anyone was pushing a stroller or a wheelchair they would have a hard time doing it over those cracks. That area is specially designed for people that are pushing strollers or wheelchairs and it is actually making it harder for them instead of easier." Becca, 14 years old, Sarpy Cass.
"This is dangerous because sometimes cars don’t stop. I think it would be safer to put a traffic light or lights here instead. I think this is dangerous because cars pass by really fast and don’t see who is standing or trying to walk through the crosswalk." Laina, 13 years old, Ventura.
"I chose this picture because there is a car in the way of people walking. I think this place is crowded with people. If the car hadn’t stopped in time she could have killed someone. What we can do to stay safe is waiting until the car stops before crossing. I think the police and the government should keep the streets safe." Denise, 13 years old, Ventura.
"I chose this picture because this is a crosswalk that I use every day to walk home and cars usually never stop behind the crossing areas of the pedestrians. It is important that walking areas are marked very clearly and here they are not. It is important to always look both ways and be patient before walking and crossing because cars don’t always stop where they should. The crosswalks should be marked more clearly. The city people should make sure this is done. This will ensure walking is safer for everyone." Vanessa, 13 years old, Ventura.
