Big Kids (5-9)
This is what you need to know about me…
I’m taking bigger risks now that I am more active and independent.
I’m going to start riding my bike alone, which means you’ll need to set clear safety rules for me. Tell me the truth and let me know that serious injuries can hurt me for the rest of my life.
My friends have a big influence over me, but I still trust you to keep me safe. Talk to me about how I can get hurt and how I can prevent it. Don’t forget to explain why, so I can make good decisions when you’re not there to help me.
Did you know…?
- I have less coordination for pedaling than older kids.
- I have more trouble recognizing and avoiding obstacles than you.
- My hand-eye coordination is still developing.
- I’m at higher risk for scalds, especially from tableware and microwaves.
- I can inhale harmful gasses quickly because my lungs are still small and developing.
- I’m a sound sleeper and I’m less likely to wake up when a smoke alarm sounds.
- I need a booster seat until the seat belt fits, when I’m about 4 foot 9 inches tall and 80 to 100 pounds.
